Collaborations and Signature Programs
Our major initiatives are designed to meet the needs of justice-involved individuals, their families and neighborhoods through targeted, impactful programming:
Empowering Voices
Empowering Voices is a collaborative initiative led by Love for Words, Award Services, AJ Solutions, and other Entrepreneurial Service Organizations (ESOs).
The program empowers justice-involved and at-risk youth through literacy development, journaling, creative writing, and performance-based expression.
Through a trauma-informed lens, participants explore personal narratives while developing communication, public speaking, and critical thinking skills.
Empowering Voices directly addresses the need for enhanced literacy, emotional expression, and positive coping strategies.
The program helps young people develop healthy outlets for anger, trauma, depression, and other emotional stressors—offering alternatives to self-harm, violence, or isolation.
The goal is to ignite a love for learning and cultivate a new generation of confident communicators, writers, and leaders.
Project Big Brown Barn: Bridging Health Equity Gaps
Spearheaded by Christine Miller-Scott, founder of the Big Brown Barn Conference and Retreat Center, in collaboration with Axom Development Company, AJ Solutions and GWC, this transformative initiative introduces justice-involved individuals and at-risk youth from Rochester to rural living, agricultural innovation, and sustainable land stewardship.
The Big Brown Barn (BBB) project partners with two African American-operated farms—Scott Farm and Scott-Miller Farm, both based in Monroe County, LeRoy, NY—to provide participants with hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.
As part of GWC’s broader Workforce Development & Job Readiness Sustainable Career Path Initiatives, the BBB project prepares participants for green careers that promote health equity, economic resilience, and environmental justice.
Focus areas include:
- Green & Agriculture Jobs: Training in organic farming, sustainable land management, and green technology applications in food production.
- Hydroponics: Soil-free cultivation techniques that optimize resource use and support urban agriculture.
- Aquaponics: Integrated systems combining fish farming and plant cultivation to teach symbiotic sustainability.
- Water Testing: Skills in water quality monitoring and environmental compliance for public health and ecosystem protection.
- Industry Certifications: Opportunities to earn credentials that enhance employability, workplace safety, and technical advancement across green and agricultural sectors.

It is designed to empower justice-involved individuals, returning citizens, and residents of rural and underserved communities.
PROPEL combines policy education, civic engagement, and technical workforce training to build capacity and promote long-term sustainability through three integrated sub-programs:
Water Meter Sustainable Program
A collaborative environmental justice initiative focused on clean water innovation and green infrastructure. Participants are trained in smart water meter technology, plumbing upgrades, and sustainable water management systems. This 3–9-month program also raises awareness of clean water access and builds community resilience through local job creation.
Trenchless Technology Training Program
A 6–12-month technical training program offering National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) pipeline certification and hands-on learning in trenchless utility installation and repair. Participants gain the skills necessary for careers in municipal and governmental infrastructure maintenance—addressing aging systems while minimizing environmental disruption.
Renewable Energy Training Program
This program delivers comprehensive, industry-aligned training in solar, wind, water, and gas technologies. Over 6–12 months, participants can earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications and prepare for careers in the green energy economy, including solar panel installation, wind turbine maintenance, and clean energy project support.
PROPEL’s objective is to provide clean water solutions, expand access to green infrastructure, and create equitable workforce pipelines into high-demand sustainability careers.
